Past Projects

Bicycle Rodeos:

The County Posse assists the local police departments in Calhan and Simla by supplying prizes and assisting with instructing elementary students participating in the rodeo, bicycle and traffic safety.  This is conducted annually at the three schools, Calhan Elementary, Frontier Academy and Simla Elementary.  Sunglasses were given out to all students and the winning participants received new helmets and pads.  Total of about 400 students spread across 3 Fridays.

Elizabeth Stampede:

The Elizabeth Stampede is known nationwide as the "Biggest Little Rodeo" as well as being voted 8 yrs in a row as the "Best Small Rodeo of the Year" by the PRCA Mountain States circuit.  The posse is instrumental in providing security on foot, motorized vehicles and on horseback.  For many of the past years, the County Posse has worked with the Elbert County Sheriff's office and the Elizabeth Police in providing a safe and enjoyable rodeo for the annual 3 days of fun.  With members well known in the community and local schools, and others with various medical backgrounds, the County Posse provides more then just security.  The Elizabeth Stampede is the biggest event of the year for the County Posse and undeniably the funnest!

Cowboy up in Colorado:

Cowboy Up in Colorado is another event not unlike the Elizabeth Stampede, just a little smaller.  The County Posse is called in to assist the local law enforcement in ensuring a safe and family fun time during the rodeo weekend.

Current Projects

Mounted Posse Division:

Currently, the County Posse is re-establishing a mounted division.  They follow a separate set of SOP's that have been set by the Douglas County Sheriff's mounted patrol unit and occasionally train with the deputies as well.

Upcoming and planned projects:

County Search & Rescue:

The Posse is supporting the formation of an Elbert County Search & Rescue Team of trained personnel that would be on-call for any county emergency. We are prepared to fund much of the necessary training and coordinate the classes as well as participate in any call-out as needed. We have deployed in the past for searches for missing persons and crime scene evidence. Several of our members are currently members of the Douglas County Search & Rescue Team and have taken the 5 month training that is offered there.

VIPS programs:

The Posse has proposed to help several local law enforcement organizations to form and manage volunteer groups under the Volunteers In Police Service (VIPS) national program that was announced by President George Bush after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The national program is supported by the International Chiefs of Police, the US Department of Justice and the COPS program. The purpose of forming local VIPS organizations is to have citizen volunteers that are on-call and trained to assist local law enforcement and other emergency services organizations as needs arise. For more information on the national program, go to http://www.policevolunteers.org, or call 1-800-843-4227 for information about any local programs, call 303-646-5456. Town Police Departments. The Posse has forged supportive relationships with town police departments. Elder Watch and Scam Alertness Seminars have been held in Elizabeth, Kiowa, Calhan, and Simla put on by Posse personnel with guidance and material from the Colorado Attorney Generals Office. The The Posse has facilitated a dog registration and vaccination day in Calhan and Simla.
